Make small quilts using the template designs. Each of the patterns can be printed out on a sheet of ordinary A4 paper. They do not need to be resized.

House, Shed and Shop

Each project is based on a house, shed or shop. I used the front covers of my books for the basis of the designs, but these are very versatile and can be adapted to make various styles of little houses, cottages and shops.

Shed in the City

I’ve included a Shed in the City quilt I made to show how using free–hand stitchery can add interest to the little quilt.

Shed quilt

The shed template measures 8 inches (20cm) x 4.5 inches (12cm).

The finished quilt measures 10.5 inches (27cm) x 9.5 inches (24cm).

I started by cutting out the three main shapes of the shed. I put them on a background fabric of white cotton. I attached the two wall sections and the roof using tiny dabs of fabric glue to hold them in place while I hand stitched them on.

Once the three shed pieces were attached, I added the beehive. Then I used black thread to free–hand stitch around the shed and beehive to create a running stitch outline. I deliberately kept the stitches random and left some frayed edges, so you don’t have to be precise. This adds to the hand stitchery look of the finished project.

I used remnants of fabric that had bees, cakes, bunting and other items on it. I cut them out and stitched them on. This is where the shed quilt block pattern is adaptable. Use any little scraps you have to give a theme to the shed. I used a tea shop theme and added cakes. You could make the shed into a gardening shed and add flowers and other gardening items. You could also embroider flowers on to the quilt. Here’s a link to the small template designs which include embroidery flowers.

To finish the quilt add a backing fabric and bias binding around the edges. I used pink ribbon instead of bias binding.

I plan to use the little shed quilt as a wall hanging, but I’m also going to use this quilt block as part of a larger tea quilt combined with other blocks. See the Tea Shop quilt.

The Bakery by the Seaside

I’ve included a Bakery by the Seaside pattern that you can use to make a small quilt. It’s based on The Bakery by the Seaside cover.

Tea Quilts

The cottage, shed and bakery quilts are part of my tea quilt designs. The tea quilts have a tea theme. Each quilt block has a tea hue or includes teapots, teacups and cakes for an afternoon tea pattern.

My tea quilts are inspired by the colours of various tea blends — elegant grey, warm golds and brown, burnished orange — and from cakes and bakery products. Buttercream and vanilla hues look great with splashes of vibrant cherry, lemon and fondant pink. Cake tones range from pure white icing to raisin, brandy, candied peel, nutmeg and black treacle. The colours blend together beautifully like the teas and cakes they were based on and the quilt blocks look lovely when sewn into quilts.

These are some of my tea quilt designs.
