Mug Rugs

Mug rugs are handy when you’re having a cup of tea or coffee and cake.

These three designs are bright, cheerful and easy to make.

Use the templates to make the bunting cake, sewing machine and large teacup. Use the vintage three tier cake template (on the bottom left of this pdf) or the fairy cake as a replacement for the cake stand, or use fabric that has this type of print. The teacup mug rug was made using the large teacup template.

You will need:

2 squares of fabric – 7 inches (18cm) x 7 inches (18cm) with a cake and sewing machine print or use the template patterns to make these.

1 piece of backing fabric – 7 inches (18cm) x 14 inches (36cm).

1 piece of batting – 7 inches (18cm) x 14 inches (36cm).

Method:

Sew the two squares of the cake and sewing machine fabric together along the centre seam. Use a small seam allowance. Press the seam flat.

Sew the front piece to the backing and batting. (Trim the batting and backing fabric so that they are the same size as the front piece before sewing). Sew the front and backing fabric pieces right sides together with the batting underneath the wrong side of the front fabric (see diagram above). Sew around the edges leaving a gap for turning (see diagram below).

Trim excess fabric from the corners.

Turn the mug rug right sides out. Sew the gap shut.

Press the mug rug.

It’s ready to use. You could add a binding trim but this particular design doesn’t need it because the edges are already tidy.

Sew this piece to the backing and batting. (Trim the batting and backing fabric to the same size as the front piece before sewing). Sew the front and backing fabric pieces right sides together with the batting underneath the wrong side of the front fabric (see diagram above for Bunting Cake & Sewing Machine Mug Rug). Sew around the edges leaving a gap for turning. Trim excess fabric from the corners.

Turn the mug rug right sides out. Sew the gap shut.

Sew the small appliqué pieces to the white section of the mug rug. Use fusible webbing to attach these to the fabric and then sew around the edges. When sewing these make sure your stitches don’t show through on the back of the mug rug.

Press the mug rug.

Tea Cup Mug Rug

IMG_3652 IMG_3639

This two–sided mug rug was made using the large teacup template pattern. It measures approximately 8.5 inches (22cm) x 5.5 inches (14cm) when finished. I used a strawberry print and a floral print for each side of the teacup and made both the handles from pink cotton fabric.

You will need:

2 pieces of patterned fabric for the teacup – cut to size using the template.

2 pieces of fabric for the handle of the cup – cut to size using the template.

1 piece of batting cut to fit the main part of the cup.

Method:

Sew together the two main parts of the teacup (right sides together) with the batting underneath. Leave a gap for turning where the handle will also fit in.

Turn the teacup right sides out.

Make the handle. Sew the two pieces of the handle together (right sides together), leaving a gap for turning.

Turn the handle right sides out. Press the handle flat.

Fit the handle into the gap and then sew the gap shut to secure the handle in place. You could also top stitch this in place.

Press the mug rug flat.
