Fabric Pattern

I’ve designed a pattern for the cottage sewing machine cover that’s ready for cutting out and sewing. I’ve deliberately made the sizing generous so that it will fit many standard size sewing machines. You can always make it a bit smaller by taking in the seams.

It’s available here on a yard of fabric from my collection. I’ve included the robin draught excluder and other items on the same yard so there are several things to sew from the single yard of fabric.

Your Own Fabric

You can of course use your own fabric to make a sewing machine cover. It’s the same size/pattern as the cottage design. I’ve sewn one to demonstrate how it would look if made from white cotton with a floral print. I used my Fairytale Pink Bluebells fabric available here.

So, basically, you can sew the cottage sewing machine cover from the printed fabric, or you can make your own with any fabrics you have. Cotton, linen and poplin work well for the sewing machine cover. I used cotton for both covers featured here.

The pattern

This pattern is quite generous in size. If it’s too big for your sewing machine simply reduce the measurements. (There are also ways to measure your sewing machine to custom–fit your cover, but I’ve tried to keep this straightforward and made a cover that should be large enough to fit many standard size sewing machines).

I added a layer of batting (soft padding) to the inside of the cover. You don’t have to do this as it’s basically a dust cover for your sewing machine, but I think it gives a better finish and look to the cover.

Size:

An estimate of size. This cover fits a machine that is 16 inches (40cm) long, 12 inches (30cm) high and 8 inches (20cm) wide. I didn’t want a snug fit because it makes it awkward to put the cover on. I prefer the cover slightly bigger, but at this point you can reduce the measurements to fit your machine.

Note: When the batting is added this gives a fuller fit to the cover.

How to make the pattern:

It’s easy.

You will need:

1 piece of fabric – 18 inches (46cm) x 32 inches (81cm).

2 pieces for the side panels each measuring – 8 inches (20cm) x 13 inches (33cm).

Use the Sewing Bee & Afternoon Tea Cottage fabric pattern for these 3 pieces or use your own fabric.

3 pieces of batting the same size as the main fabric and side panels if you want to add this.

Method:

Prepare the fabric. If you’re adding batting, attach this first to the wrong sides of the main fabric and side panels. Simply sew the batting around the edges of the fabric pieces. If you’re a quilter, you could also quilt the batting to the fabric.

Fit the side panels. With right sides together, fit the side panels to the main piece. Sew these together along three sides.

This shows the fabric pieces sewn together without any batting so you can see how the panels fit into the cover.

I sewed the cover together using a quarter inch (0.5cm) seam allowance. I trimmed excess fabric from the corners before turning the cover the right sides out.
