Fair Isle Style Scarf

I knitted this scarf using yarn that knits up into a Fair Isle design. The colours and pattern are ideal for a man’s scarf but it’s suitable for anyone.

The subtle tones of the yarn look great when knitted up into a scarf using garter stitch.

You will need:

4 balls of double knit yarn that knits up into a Fair Isle style of design. (You’ll need extra yarn if you want a wider or longer scarf).
(As an alternative to the Fair Isle, use a self–striping yarn).
Knitting needles size 4.5mm (UK 7. US 7).

Method:

Cast on 40 stitches.
Knit rows of garter stitch (knit stitches, no purl) until the scarf is as long as you require. (I knitted a scarf that was 9 inches (23cm) x 60 inches (153cm).
(See chart for other lengths).
Bind off.
Weave the tail of the yarn into the end of the scarf.

Scarf sizes
I use the following as a basic size template. (Always go by the pattern you are using. This is just my method for working out sizes). Using knitting needles 4.5mm (UK size 7. US 7), here are approximate measurements for different sizes of scarves.

Scarf widths:

These sizes are approximate as knitting tensions/yarns/knitting needles/stitches vary. However, this gives a basic idea of how many stitches are needed for different widths of scarves. The lengths are also included.

Width:
35 stitches makes a 7.5 inch (19cm) wide scarf.
40 stitches makes a 9 inch (23cm) wide scarf.
50 stitches makes a 12 inch (31cm) wide scarf.
60 stitches makes a 14 inch (36cm) wide scarf.

Length:
Medium length 48 inches (4ft) (122cm).
Medium–long 60 inches (5ft) (153cm).
Long 72 inches (6ft) (183cm).
Extra long 78 inches (6.5ft) (200cm).
