This is a soft, cosy hat that’s suitable for beginner knitters. It’s knitted using straight needles and garter stitch (knit stitches, no purl). The hat is not knitted in the round. It’s knitted flat, in one piece and then the seam at the back is sewn together. A fluffy pom pom is stitched on top.
I’ve included three sizes – adult small, adult medium, adult large (man size).
The hat shown here is the adult medium size. It’s quite stretchy and can be worn down like a slouch hat or turned up cuff–style. Either way, it’s a cosy hat for wintry days and very easy to make.
You will need:
1 100g ball of double knit yarn.
Knitting needles size 6mm (UK 4. US 10). (Use these for all three sizes of hats).
A pom pom.
A knitters needle or embroidery needle to sew up the seam using a piece of yarn.
Method:
Decide on the size you want and then follow the instructions. (See sizes below).
(Adult medium is a good average size and this hat is quite roomy and stretchy).
Note: If you want a tighter–knit hat simply use knitting needles 4.5mm (UK 7. US 7) instead of the larger needles. This will, of course, make the hats slightly smaller, but the pattern still works.
Adult medium size:
Cast on 40 stitches.
Knit rows of garter stitch (knit stitches, no purl) until the work measures 18 inches (46cm).
You will have a knitted rectangle.
Bind off. Leave a tail of yarn to use for sewing up the seam.
Sew the seam:
With right sides together fold the rectangle in two. Use a knitters needle or embroidery needle and the yarn to sew the seam. Use a mattress stitch or similar stitch to join the seam. Put the needle through the edges of the knitting to join them. This creates a flat seam and makes the seam less noticeable.
Secure the finished stitching, and then weave the ends of the yarn into the hat (slip the needle with the yarn through a few stitches to hide the end of the yarn).
Use a running stitch along the edges of the top of the hat and pull them together to close the gap on the crown. Secure the end with a knot.
Turn the hat right sides out.
Use the darning needle and piece of yarn to sew the pom pom on to the hat.
And that’s the hat complete.
This will give you a hat that is approximately 18 inches (46cm) round and 7 inches (18cm) high.
For the other sizes (small adult size and large adult/man size) use the following stitches and measurements. All the other instructions are the same as those for the adult medium size hat.
Small adult size:
Use knitting needles 6mm (UK size 4. US 10).
Cast on 35 stitches.
Knit rows of garter stitch until the work measures 16 inches (41cm).
This hat will be approximately 16 inches (41cm) round and 6.5 inches (16.5cm) high.
Large adult/man size:
Use knitting needles 6mm (UK 4. US 10).
Cast on 40 stitches.
Knit rows of garter stitch until the work measures 20–22 inches (51–56cm).
This hat will be approximately 20–22 inches (51–56cm) round and 7 inches (18cm) high.
