Fashion Cowl

Cosy and fashionable, this is very easy to knit and ideal for beginners. It’s knitted in garter stitch (knit stitches, no purl) using ordinary, straight knitting needles.

More experienced knitters may prefer to knit the cowl on the round without having a seam at the back of the cowl. However, I’ve made this very easy — it’s a rectangle that is knitted and then sewn together along one seam. I’ve shown how to sew it so that the seam blends into the knit. The finished cowl is very soft and drapes well, and because of this the seam really isn’t noticeable.

When finished, the cowl measures 24 inches (61cm) x 13 inches (33cm).

Note:
I used one 100g ball of baby soft, double knit yarn. It’s a lovely turquoise colour with a bit of sparkle in it. Other items that go well with this are:
Seahorse Brooch/Appliqué. (Pin or sew this on to the cowl).
Knitted Blue Flower. (Omit the ribbon. Pin or sew the flower on to the cowl).
Blue Sparkle Wrist Warmers. (These work well with the cowl as a set).

You will need:

1 100g ball of soft double knit yarn.
Knitting needles size 4.5mm. (UK 7. US 7).

Method:

Cast on 55 stitches.
Knit each row in garter stitch (knit stitches, no purl) until the work measures 24 inches (61cm).
Bind off. (Leave a length of the yarn attached so that you can use it to sew the seam together).

Sew the seam:

With right sides together fold the rectangle in two. Use a knitters needle or embroidery needle and the yarn to sew the seam. Use a mattress stitch or similar stitch to join the seam. Put the needle through the edges of the knitting to join them. This creates a flat seam and makes the seam less noticeable.

Secure the finished stitching, and then weave the ends of the yarn into the cowl (slip the needle with the yarn through a few stitches to hide the end of the yarn).

Turn the cowl right sides out.

It’s ready to wear.
